Finding the Least Common Denominator

When adding or subtracting fractions with different denominators, you’ll need to find a common denominator. It is better to find the least common denominator so that there will be less work when it comes time to reducing the final answer.
“The least common denominator of two or more non-zero denominators is actually the smallest whole number that is divisible by each of the denominators.” (Help with Fractions.com)
When teaching my kids, I couldn’t pinpoint how to find the least common denominator, but rather just a common denominator (and sometimes they’d be huge!) So I went searching for methods, and this is what I have found.

For Younger Students:
Least Common Denominator Lesson from Math is Fun.com
Finding the Least Common Denominator (method of listing multiples)

Methods

Basically the same method illustrated in Ray’s Math:
scan0002
Finding the least common denominator – part of another lesson, scroll down after Google Ad. (similar method as above)
3 Methods for Finding Least Common Denominator
Take The Frustration Out Of Finding The Least Common Denominator ( Help with Fractions.com) – shows 2 methods for finding the least common denominator (very detailed)
From my daughter’s algebra book:

Example using the above method:

Tools
Least Common Multiple Tool – Nifty, plug in three numbers and get your least common multiple/denominator. Great for checking your manual work.
Games & Interactives
Least Common Multiple Interactive – simple, yet neat online activity where student must find the LCM/LCD of numbers. This might be a neat alternative to doing problems from your textbook. (Only a handful of problems, but most are application problems)
Least Common Multiple (LCM) Game – super old site, but nifty idea for making a card game.

Seeking Refuge from 4 Things After Tashahhud Lesson

“The Prophet (sal-Allahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) used to say:
‘When one of you has finished the [last] Tashahhud, he should seek refuge with Allah from four things; [saying]:
1. Allah! I truly seek refuge with You from the punishment of Hellfire,
2. and from the punishment of the grave,
3. and from the trials of living and dying,
4. and from the evil [trials] of the False Christ.
[Then he should supplicate for himself with what occurs to him.]
"He (sal-Allahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) would supplicate with it in his own Tashahhud." 1

(Prophet's Prayer Described)

Seeking Refuge from 4 Things Lesson - 27 page lesson

Note:
The majority of scholars held the view that this Du`a’ (supplication) falls under the category of stressed Sunnah. It was been reported on the authority of Tawus, one of the great Tabi`un (Followers, the generation after the Companions of the Prophet) that this Du`a’ is obligatory. Tawus is also reported to have ordered his son to repeat his Salah when he knew that he did not recite this Du`a’. This indicates that such Du`a’ is a stressed Sunnah, which the Mu’min should not miss in obligatory or voluntary Salah.

Math Notebook Cover Page and Table of Contents

Math Notebook Cover Page and Table of Contents - I'm working on trying to get our math reference notebooks going. For the past couple of years, I've just sort of written up handmade notes that show the kids steps or key concepts of what we are studying. I'm hoping to have each of the kids keep a math notebook that they can use for reference over the years.

In this download, there is a simple math notebook cover and two different versions of a table of contents.  It doesn't matter the order that you add your notes if the student keeps up with the table of contents. One table of contents lists as many math terms I could think of (or find) in alphabetical order, that way, when student has notes on a particular topic, he can find it in the table of contents and write the page number it is found on; or there is an alphabetical blank table and student can enter the topic names and page numbers all manually.

My version of math notebooking is maybe note the general notebooking type, but rather I create the notes and they put them in their notebook. As much as possible, I try to make the notes more aesthetically pleasing (something to make it more likely that they will actually review/use them) so I often have cut out sections for them to glue into the notebooks. Sometimes, I use guided notes which provide a framework for the notes and my kids have to fill in blanks or give short answer explanations.

Our math notebooking pages can be found all around TJ, in sha Allah, under the various categories.

Operations and Order of Operations Study Guide

Operations and Order of Operations Study Guide -  a review guide I made for my kids that reviews the four basis operations (addition, multiplication, subtraction, and division) as well as the order of operations for problems with multiple operations in them.

Adhaan

This is a follow up to the Adhaan resources I posted on the blog.  A member in one of my homeschooling groups was asking the group for some more ideas for teaching about the adhaan. Here are some I came up with:

  • You Tube has some nice videos of the adhaan.  The ones I saw just had pretty pictures displayed while the adhaan “played.”
  • Make strips with the text of the adhaan and cut out. Student must put them in order.
  • Make a worksheet with certain words of the adhaan missing
  • Memorization of the adhaan and iqama; learn what each word means
  • Practice calling the adhaan. Maybe at prayer times in the house/class if you don’t hear the adhaan where you live.  Have a student be the muadhdhin of the day.
  • Not sure if this is playing with it too much, but you could have one student say the first line of the adhaan, the next student says the next, and so on.
  • Learn about Bilal, the first muadhdhin, have students write a mini biography about him or write a book report about an article or book about him.
  • Make a lapbook and include the text in Arabic and English and other key facts associated with the adhaan,  including the supplications made after them.  You might use my earlier resources to start off……….
  • Make a public service announcement ad about the adhaan
  • Learn about minarets; do a related craft, maybe make a diorama or clay minaret display; draw a picture of a masjid with a minaret; minaret coloring page. Find daleel against/for the argument that minarets are an innovation in the religion.
  • Write a magazine article or newspaper article about the adhaan.
  • Incorporate learning about the sense of hearing
  • Current events (you knew this was coming?) read about the recent banning of minarets in Switzerland.

What is Jumuah?

Jumuah or Yawmul Jumuah is Friday in Arabic
jumuah calendar
O you who believe (Muslims)! When the call is proclaimed for the Salât (prayer) on Friday (Jumu'ah prayer), come to the remembrance of Allah [Jumu'ah religious talk (Khutbah) and Salât (prayer)] and leave off business (and every other thing).
That is better for you if you did but know!  Then when the (Jumu'ah) Salât (prayer) is ended, you may disperse through the land, and seek the bounty of Allah (by working), and remember Allah much, that you may be successful.

Categories of Actions (Rulings of Fiqh)

Actions in the study of fiqh are divided into 5 categories.....

  • Waajib (obligatory)
  • Mustahabb (recommendable)
  • Mubaah (permissible)
  • Makrooh (detested)
  • Haraam (forbidden)

We have studied the categories (on the introductory level of course) in our homeschool and here are some resources that I made:
