Make a simile sandwich. For an entertaining way to practice similes, have your child plan a picnic, using similes. What to pack? How about apples green as a grasshopper, rhubarb pie with whipped cream like clouds, or a sub sandwich big as a baseball bat? This exercise will let your child flex her creativity, while giving her practice in simile skills!

In literature, there is always some type of conflict (a struggle, challenge, or opposition) that drives the story. There are several types of conflict:

Character vs. character

Character vs. self

Character vs. nature

Character vs. society

Character vs. technology

Character vs. supernatural

Character vs. fate

A great deal of the time, there may be more than one type of conflict present.

Here are a few resources on types of conflict that I found helpful:
This is really written more so for writers, but the author does a good job of summarizing the types of conflict as well as provides examples. There's also a nice info graphic here.
This page provides a brief overview of the different types of conflict and then has several worksheets. Also includes 2 powerpoint lessons. I like the powerpoint lessons as they are brief and provide a few practice activities at the end (students are given a scenario and have to identify the type of conflict present.) No bells and whistles but concise and to the point.

My 5 year old wanted to do math problems like her older sister so I wrote some addition facts on the board which she happily did. But since I had been wanting to work on her handwriting of the numbers, I decided to make a worksheet where she could trace the answers since she was having trouble writing some numbers on her own. It was a hit. (I put them in plastic page protectors so she could use a dry erase pen and reuse them). Then I noticed it looked like the little activity cards that you could take a clothespin and pin the right answer, so that's a secondary use of these if you cut out the the squares out.

Math Trick for Adding 9 to a Number

Some people cringe at the thought of teaching tricks or shortcuts (and I have seen some doozies so I get it, to an extent), but as long as my kids understand the concepts of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, I see no problem with introducing some tricks here and there as long as they are not so complicated that you spend more time learning the trick then the fact.
Another "trick" that works well for adding 9 to any number is to add 10 to the number first and then subtract 1. The trick in the video only works up to 9+10.
My daughter and I started working on decimals recently and I'm kind of winging it without a textbook, but I wanted to approach it in as structured of a manner as I could. So I found a learning objectives list to use as our base and then using worksheets and other activities to provide the meat. Below are some of the resources I've found online.

Introduction to Decimals

Very comprehensive and engaging video. A great introduction to decimals!

Model decimals through tenths and hundredths

Modeling Tenths
Using place value blocks, have student build and record values from 1/10 and up (.1, .2, .3... up to .9), show what happens when 1 more is added to .9, and then continue with values after 1 (1.1, 1.2, 1.3, etc)

Modeling Hundredths
Using place value blocks, have student build and record values with hundredths.

We started off our study with the book "The US Constitution and You" by Syl Sobel. I happened to have a copy of it from one of my older kids charter school days (and never used it) but I was trying to reignite our social studies again and found it handy this time around. I read it to my daughter over the course of a few days and didn't try to get real "schooly" and we both enjoyed it. (I sometimes go overboard trying to replicate school and then get burnt out)

You can grab a copy of it yourself over at Amazon:
A handy template for taking notes from audio lectures/khutbahs!

I've begun listening to many beneficial audio lessons and khutbahs and try to take notes as much as possible but I end up writing notes in a random spiral notebook and usually end up forgetting about them. So I thought it might help to make a template to use for taking the notes and storing in the Islamic Studies binder that I have recently started.
This is a little math center I made for my kids years ago (updated slightly). The page that the sorting board is writing on can be folded and turned into a storage pouch. I highly recommend printing the board and cards out on cardstock for durability.

December 2017 (scroll down for 2019 update!)
Over the summer, I learned about Prolific Surveys from some fellow MTurkers (MTURK is a platform where you can make money performing Artificial Intelligence tasks. Check out my MTURK tag for info on how to get started). I started back in July Prolific after hearing about it on one of my MTURK groups.

When you sign up, you answer eligibility questions. These will qualify you for surveys. Then, on a regular basis I get more eligibility questions for more chances to qualify for surveys.

What I like is that I only* get offers for surveys that I qualify for. (*When I started writing this post, that was the case, however I have gotten 1 survey that I did not qualify for, but I've done over 40 surveys, so that's not so bad to me) This is in contrast to my experiences with sites like Swagbucks, With Prolific I'll only get an offer to participate for a survey if I am qualified (with that one exception). With Swagbucks, I would go through lengthy prequalification questions only to be turned down for the majority of the surveys which was very frustrating. MTURK is generally better as any prequal questions are generally any where from one question to maybe 10, but they are generally quick--(in a lot of cases, there are no prequalification questions with MTURK). Now, with Prolific, it is even better because I answer eligibility questions when they appear on my dashboard and wait for them to contact me with surveys I prequalified for. (However, you can always check your account to see if there are surveys because a few times there have been surveys that I didn't get an email about).

I generally get several surveys a week so far. Most are under a £ (they use £, not dollars) but recently I've gotten a £1 and a £2 dollar survey. I've missed a few survey invitations (at first I didn't realize that that is what they were in my email). So far, since July, I've earned $38 which is not a lot, but I have cashed out one time and the money did come in handy at the time, so that's a win. I am not sure what other make from Prolific on a monthly basis, but I'm off to a pretty good start as the surveys generally don't take much time and I just see it as an extra way to make a little money.

If you'd like to check out Prolific, you can try here: https://www.prolific.ac

A caveat: The payout for Prolific is made through PayPal or Circle. A catch is that PayPal cash outs are charged PayPal's 2.9% + 20p fee and there is a fee as well for Circle, though I think if you accumulate £20 then there is no fee with Circle (but I'm not really familiar with Circle). I have cashed out once via PayPal and they took maybe the equivalent of $1. The payout was really quick, I think it took 1 day, maybe 2 tops for me to receive the money in my PayPal account.

Update: March 2019
I'm really liking Prolific. I continue to see a pretty good supply of surveys daily (there may have just been a few days where I didn't manage to catch one). I've cashed out a few more times (probably 4 now in total) for a total of about $208 USD (you are paid in British Pounds) and have made about $143 USD in the last 4 months. I kind of slept on Prolific for my first year, just reponding to the email invites to surveys and then someone in one of my MTURK groups mentioned it and I now keep a pinned tab for it in my browser and I check it throughout the day.

I recently started another small side hustle and I received my first payout so I thought I'd share my experiences.

I started with User Crowd (formerly Usability Hub) toward the end of January. With User Crowd, you are in the role of a "design tester." User Crowd provides you with quick, simple testing tasks related to the design of a website or app. You are asked to chime in on things like logo design, usability of a site or app (where would you click, can you find, etc). These tests are generally really quick and maybe take anywhere from 1-5 minutes. For each test, you are awarded credits and these credits are then immediately turned into money amounts upon completion of a test. The tasks range from $0.10 and up. The site says the pay per task ranges from $0.10 to $0.50 but I have gotten ones for $0.60 and $0.70 per task. As you might expect, the ones on the higher end take a little longer. The site says the pay is approximately $0.10 per minute of testing and I think this is a pretty good guide.

Of course, you aren't going to make mad money on here, but it is some extra cash. It took me about a month to make the $10 minimum payout threshhold, but since it's really not that time intensive, it was worth it to me. The key, though, is that this is really only worth it if you spend a considerable amount of time on your computer each day. I am on my computer throughout the day doing MTURK, looking up homeschooling resources, doing homeschooling lessons on the computer, etc so I catch a lot of the tasks. If you are not around your computer a lot, you are going to miss out on a lot of the tasks. I get a desktop notification on my computer that I can just click on to go to the task. You can also just go to the site and check your dashboard, which I sometimes do, but a majority of the time, there will be no tasks available so getting those notifications are key.

Payout

To be paid by User Crowd, you must use PayPal. As I said, there is a minimum $10 threshhold before you can request a payment. On the site it says payments can take up to 30 days, but I requetsted a payment on March 4 and received a payment on March 11.

This was my first payment so I can't really tell yet if this is a good estimation of the average time of a payout. I was just happy it came this quick as I read on a blogger's post that it took about 30 days to get paid (but this may have been some years ago).

So......... while this opportunity obviously won't make you rich, when used in conjunction with other side hustles (eg. MTURK, Prolific, etc) it can add up.

What is fluency and how is it helpful?

“Fluency is defined as the ability to read with speed, accuracy, and proper expression. In order to understand what they read, children must be able to read fluently whether they are reading aloud or silently. When reading aloud, fluent readers read in phrases and add intonation appropriately. Their reading is smooth and has expression. “(WETA)

Fluency can be developed by concentrating on five key components:

accuracy (correct pronunciation, emphasizing syllables correctly, vocabulary development)

rate (matching reading speed with type of reading, using punctuation correctly)

phrasing (using your voice to group words together so reading is not choppy)

expression (using your voice to express feeling)

intonation (rise and fall in pitch of voice to match what is read; use proper rhythm, raising sound of voice for words and phrases which should be emphasized/stressed)

It is best to teach these concepts in the context of the actual reading passage you are working on rather than in general.

Fluency can be developed in the following ways:

reading!!!!!

repeated reading practice with feedback/guidance (and mini lessons)

vocabulary development

Repeated Reading Exercises

I first started doing repeated reading with my oldest daughter years ago. Since then, it has always been a very helpful tool to build up fluency for my kids. My kids have always seemed to enjoy it as well.

Basic Routine(what we do)

1. Prep: In the beginning, prepare or make a copy of a progress graph chart to record speeds.

2. Prepare the reading selections (weekly)

Pick the reading passage(s) for the week and mark off:

the length of the passage (100-150 words approximately, but don’t stop mid paragraph)

chunks (phrases)—use slashes to show phrase boundaries (The dog / walked down / the street--A lot of times, I leave off chunking due to forgetfullness or laziness but it is very helpful when you have kids who just read each word one at a time without chunking so that it sounds choppy)

fluency skills to work on; words to be emphasized (note why they should be emphasized);

vocabulary student may not know

What should you use for reading passages?

Really anything—stories, news articles, poems. It is a good idea to vary the reading material each week to give student practice reading different types of written works.

Here are a few free suggestions for reading passages:

McGraw Hill has a series of Language workbooks called On Level Practice Books for grades 1-6, which is what we currently use. Each unit contains passages for the purpose of practicing fluency.

TpT Free Reading Passages Grades 1-4

Anything you have around the house, story books, poetry, even textbooks are good. Just be sure not to make the portion selected for repeated reading too long, try 100-150 words, but of course, if the 100-150 words end in the middle of a paragraph, complete the paragraph. You can use longer selections for older students. ( I use passages of less than 100 words for my younger kids).

3. Repeated Reading Drills:

At the very beginning, establish a baseline of fluency in terms of speed and accuracy by having student read a passage in one minute and record the speed, correcting for errors:

(Total number of words - # errors = Words correct/minute)

“Typical” first graders read 60 wpm.
“Typical” second graders read 70 wpm.
“Typical” third graders read 80 wpm.)

(There's a fluency standards table here which shows typical fluency rates for grades 1-6 over the course of a school year). I just use these as a guide.

Typical Session (3 times a week or so):

1. MODELING: Read the passage to the student to model fluent reading of the passage. (also, model nonfluent reading sometimes so student an see the difference)

2. DIRECT INSTRUCTION: Go back over the passage, discuss with student the fluency skills which will be targeted (see fluency building topics below ) in that session as well as vocabulary (meaning and pronunciation) student may not know.

As a general rule and quick helper during your sessions, keep these five elements in mind for what to concentrate on:

accuracy

rate

intonation

expression

phrasing

3. REPEATED READING: Let student read the passage orally to you (do not interrupt); mark down words student struggled with, places that should have been emphasized based upon previous lessons and places that should have been emphasized based upon this lesson’s foci.

4. FEEDBACK: Look over the passage with student and point out words that should have been emphasized (but weren’t) and why; words read incorrectly. Do pronunciation drills on words that are hard for student to read (show student how to pronounce correctly and have them repeat the words several times. Have student repeat the reading several times, making sure to offer feedback as appropriate (making sure not to interrupt student until a sentence is complete). You can also time each reading which may help motivate the student more if necessary as well as help student see progress.

5. MEASURE/TRACK PROGRESS: At the end of the week or so, take a timed reading (on the week’s passage, without feedback) and record the speed on student’s progress graph.

You may want to select a multiple paragraph reading selection for the week and work your way through the paragraphs during the week, one at a time, sticking with one until several, consistent fluent readings have been achieved for each paragraph.

You may also want to record the first repeated reading of the week and the last one to notice progress/improvement.

Fluency Skill Building Topics

Things you can focus on in fluency exercises. Choose one or more to focus on each time in a mini lesson during the repeated reading routine.

Tone should change to match type of reading

Do not read in a monotone voice

Pauses – end of sentence (long pause, count of two)

Pauses – after commas (short pause, count of one)

Pronunciation (sounds, syllables); do drills to practice pronouncing vocabulary that is difficult to read

Emphasize words in quotation marks (dialogue/terms)

Emphasize strong verbs, adverbs (eg. “so”), and adjectives

Don’t run words together, enunciate each word separately, don’t omit syllables

example, don’t say “dirtand” for “dirt and”

Use punctuation to cue the rise and fall of voice at the end of sentences (raise voice on the last word of a question); read exclamations with excitement

Emphasize words in a series (except “and” ) – daisies, roses, and daffodils

Emphasize negative words such as “no/not” or positive words such as “yes”

Emphasize signal words (e.g. first, next, last)

Emphasize conjunctions such as but, or, however

Emphasize contrast words when trying to emphasize contrast

Emphasize repeated words (eg. “more and more”)

Emphasize numbers and years (stretch out or rise)

Emphasize time words (today, yesterday, etc)

Read parts slowly when you want to give greater effect

Use rise and fall (inflection) to give variety as well, not just to emphasize words, but to keep interest

Emphasize amazing facts (the only, the biggest, etc)

Emphasize superlatives (eg. better, bigger, smallest)

Read in chunks/phrases

Emphasize the preposition in prepositional phrases

Emphasize specific words to convey a certain mood or show importance

Pause for emphasis or to show hesitation.

Stretch out voice for emphasis

Pause to express a decided opinion or give a conclusion, to make a strong point or lasting impression

Practice reading the same sentence repeatedly putting emphasis on each of the words in the sentence one at a time to see the effect (in meaning/mood/emphasis)

A few questions I came up with based upon the reading:

What are three blessings of winter?

Can we only give sadaqah to Muslims?

When giving charity, we should make sure not to do what?

What is responsible for the strongest heat you feel of the summer and the bitter cold you feel during the winter?

When do we pray the night prayer?

What are two reasons it is easy to fast in the winter?

We are working on sequencing numbers up to 10 and here are a few resources I have made and some online games for practice.

Worksheets/Activities

What Comes Next?

There are several options available here. Each pack comes with 2 different worksheets. Your child can trace the correct answer or write the correct answer in the blank space. In addition, I have provided a second set of the same worksheets, but the answers are in regular print (not dotted) so you can cut out the squares and make cards for your child to put a paper clip on the correct answer.

I put the worksheets in page protectors so we could use them again and again, inshaa Allah.

Number Strip - just a little strip I made up to cut out so my daughter could use it if she needed to while completing activities such as the ones above.
