- A compound is formed when atoms of two or more elements are combined.
- Separating a compound requires a chemical reaction.
- The properties of a compound are usually different than the properties of the elements it contains.
We recently studied compounds and I thought I'd share the resources we found/used at the upper elementary level (5th/6th grade) (presented in a lesson plan format)
- Read Lesson 5 Compounds (California Science Textbook)
- View "Compounds and Mixture" - interactive, my son enjoyed this.
- Play Chemical Mixup - tell if an item is an element, compound or mixture and/or Element, Compound, Mixture - The Game
- Do "What is Rust?" experiment and/or Foam It! Cause a Chemical Reaction
- Do "Elements, Compounds, and Mixtures Worksheet I really liked this worksheet! Includes answer key
- Make an interactive notebook entry, word map or take traditional notes (e.g. Elements, Compounds, Mixtures Sort)
